Test for Menopause

Is there a test for menopause?

There are several ways your physician can check your hormone levels through blood and saliva. A hormone profile, for example, can determine the levels of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. Your physician might find this helpful in treating your perimenopausal symptoms and assessing whether hormone replacement therapy is right for you. A profile can also potentially rule out other medical problems, as well.

Sometimes a test for menopause needs to be performed more than once because hormone levels fluctuate. It may feel like your hormone levels are fluctuating by the minute. You know your body and the symptoms you're experiencing better than anyone, so speak up and get your doctor to listen.

Self-testing is available for at home use. Try this if you suffer some discomfort from your menopause symptoms and are trying to determine if what you feel is truly menopause. Don't use it as a substitute for seeing your doctor, but as a reference for discussing your symptoms together. It's not foolproof. But can be another useful tool during menopause.
