Preparing for Post-Menopause
A substantial part of a woman's life takes place in the post-menopause stage. How will you feel when you are several years past your last period? During this time, most symptoms will have disappeared. Declining estrogen levels in this menopause stage leave many post-menopause women at risk for medical concerns.
What to expect:
• Vaginal dryness might be an ongoing problem for some, along with an occasional hot flash or night sweat.
• Post menopause bleeding is not normal and should be discussed with your doctor.
• Watch for signs of osteoporosis. Risk factors can include family history, smoking, certain medicines and early menopause. Exercise and get plenty of calcium and vitamin D to improve bone strength.
• Urinary incontinence is treatable, so don't ignore the signs (infections and leaking). Although a common symptom of post-menopause, incontinence can be related to other health issues. Check with your doctor.
Also, work with your doctor to lower your risk of heart disease.
Be sure to:
• Keep your heart healthy.
• Have your cholesterol levels checked.
• Talk with your doctor about your ideal weight.
• Know if your blood pressure or blood sugar levels are too high.
This is not to suggest that your post-menopause stage will be filled with grief. Just be aware of your body and respond to it. There is only one you, so take good care of yourself.
